Flood Crisis Grounds Flights and Disrupts Commutes
Thousands of Australians are facing severe travel disruptions as catastrophic floods continue to sweep across New South Wales, leaving devastation in their wake. Heavy rains that have already claimed lives and stranded tens of thousands have now shifted their wrath toward Sydney, grounding flights and causing widespread train delays.
Sydney Now in the Firing Line as System Shifts South
As the storm eases its grip on the Mid North Coast, the weather system is now targeting New South Wales’ capital, disrupting daily life for millions. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the South Coast, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands, and Snowy Mountains Forecast districts, anticipating further hazardous conditions.
BOM Predicts Relief for Northern NSW Regions
Senior meteorologist Angus Hines offered a glimmer of hope, stating:
“What we are seeing last night and this morning, and as we move through the day on Friday, is the southward movement of the rain system affecting NSW all week.”
He added:
“That means brighter news for those areas hardest-hit, particularly around the Mid North Coast and Hunter and towards the Central Coast.”
Rainfall in the most severely impacted regions is expected to ease by Friday evening, with Mr Hines assuring the public:
“That rain will be done.”

Southern States Brace as Rainband Marches On
Still, the danger isn’t over. The rainband is continuing its relentless path south, now affecting areas across Victoria and zeroing in on Tasmania, where heavy falls are predicted into early Saturday.
Tasmania Faces Imminent Heavy Rainfall
“(There) could be some heavy falls around parts of northeastern Tasmania through the early hours of Saturday morning,” Mr Hines warned.
The Bureau’s latest satellite data confirms the shift—rain is now settling in the Mid North Coast while building momentum towards Victoria and Tasmania.
Isolated Communities and Mounting Impact
The flood-stricken Taree community remains isolated, even as waters begin to slowly recede.
Photographs show submerged roads and disrupted infrastructure, illustrating the flood’s destructive scale.
Sydney’s South and Illawarra Prepare for More
As rainfall moves southward, residents of southern Sydney and Illawarra are bracing for impact. Emergency services remain on high alert as water levels continue to pose serious threats to travel, safety, and property.
