New South Wales (NSW) is on high alert as a potent weather system is set to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hazardous surf conditions to the region. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued warnings for the Hunter and Mid North Coast areas, with Sydney also expected to experience significant wet weather.
The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is preparing for the impact of up to 180mm of rain in parts north of Newcastle. Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns ESM stated, “Flood warnings are in place for flooding on catchments across the Mid North Coast and Hunter. The NSW SES has mobilised flood rescue teams and is preparing communities for the forecast severe weather.” He emphasized, “If you do come across a flooded road, stop, turn around and find an alternative route.”
The BOM forecasts 24-hour rainfall totals of 50 to 100mm, with isolated areas potentially receiving over 180mm. Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h, with gusts up to around 90 km/h, are possible, particularly along the coast and elevated terrains. Hazardous surf conditions with waves up to five meters are expected from Sydney to Port Macquarie.

Flooding is likely on several rivers, including the Hunter, Williams, Patterson, Myall, Manning, Nambucca, Gloucester, Bellingen, and Orara. The SES has prepositioned flood rescue teams and is engaging with local communities to prepare for the anticipated severe weather.
Sydney can expect more rain to start the week, which will ease into showers by Wednesday, with temperatures peaking at a cool 20°C. Other parts of Australia, such as Melbourne and Hobart, will experience chilly days with highs around 14-15°C, while Brisbane will have a wet start to the week. In contrast, Perth will enjoy sunny conditions with temperatures reaching 25°C.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and to take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of severe weather.
