Serious Crash at Blackheath Brings Traffic to a Standstill
A severe collision between a car and multiple motorcycles caused complete traffic shutdown on the Great Western Highway at Blackheath, west of Sydney, on Sunday. The crash occurred just after midday near Tennyson Road, prompting emergency services and a medical helicopter to respond urgently.
Traffic stretched across the Blue Mountains region, with cars lined up for kilometres in both directions. Motorists were advised to avoid the area entirely and seek alternate routes like the Bells Line of Road. Congestion quickly worsened, reaching from Mount Victoria to Katoomba.
Blackheath Gridlock Eases After Lane Reopenings
Traffic cameras captured the full scale of the disruption, showing lengthy queues snaking through Blackheath’s town centre, about 120km northwest of Sydney. The region remained heavily congested while emergency crews cleared the scene and investigated the crash site.
By 1:30pm, both lanes of the Great Western Highway were reopened, allowing traffic to resume slowly. Despite the reopening, drivers in the area continued to experience delays due to the earlier backup.
LiveTraffic NSW warned motorists already on the route to expect “significant delays”, with traffic remaining heavy through the early afternoon. No details have been released yet on the condition of those involved in the crash.
Motorists Urged to Plan Around Delays
Authorities advised the public to remain cautious while driving in the region and continue monitoring traffic updates. The incident is a reminder of the importance of safe driving on high-speed mountain roads, especially during peak travel hours.
The Great Western Highway remains a key route through the Blue Mountains, and even brief closures like Sunday’s can disrupt travel plans for thousands of commuters. Emergency teams worked swiftly to reopen the road, minimising long-term impact.
