Charlotte Caslick scores try against USA in Rugby World Cup match

Wallaroos triumph in high-stakes clash against USA

The excitement around the upcoming Rugby World Cup intensifies as Australia’s Wallaroos delivered a thrilling performance, defeating the USA 30-19 at GIO Stadium. This victory was powered by the dazzling speed and skill of Olympic gold medallist Charlotte Caslick, who overshadowed American rugby star and social media sensation Ilona Maher. The Canberra crowd’s cry of “The Queen is dead. Long live the Queen” perfectly captured the shift in dominance on the field.

Victory gives Australia critical momentum

This win was more than just a scoreline; it was a crucial confidence boost for Australia. The Wallaroos, ranked sixth globally, had struggled against the USA Eagles in past encounters, winning only two of eight Tests. Meanwhile, the USA, ranked ninth, came into the game with their own momentum, thanks largely to Maher’s outstanding performances. However, on this night, Caslick’s brilliance helped Australia clinch a vital victory that sets the stage for their August rematch in the Rugby World Cup pool stages in England.

Wallaroos celebrate 30-19 victory over USA

Tactical experience drives Wallaroos’ strategy

Australia’s tactical adjustments were key to this success. Coach Jo Yapp opted for experience over experimentation, introducing a fresh front row with Bree-Anna Browne and Tania Naden alongside Eva Karpani. This strategic lineup was designed to counter the USA’s powerful pack, especially loosehead prop Hope Rogers, who made a strong early impact by charging over for a 7-0 lead.

Caslick ignites comeback against media-fueled hype

Despite the hype surrounding Maher—whose 5 million social media followers and media presence had overshadowed the Wallaroos—Australia’s resilience shone through. When captain Siokapesi Palu broke the line, the Australian team rallied, with Caslick scoring her first try in the 15s format. This pivotal moment ignited the Wallaroos’ momentum and energized the crowd.

Set pieces and physicality seal the advantage

The match showcased Australia’s growing dominance, demonstrated by their effective use of set pieces and tactical kicks, including Faitala Moleka’s exquisite 50-22 kick leading to Karpani’s try from a rolling maul. The home side’s physicality and teamwork effectively neutralized Maher, with speedy defender Georgina Friedrich disrupting the American star’s rhythm.

Ilona Maher tackled by Australian defenders in Canberra Test

Wallaroos withstand USA fightback with second-half surge

At halftime, Australia held a 19-7 lead, but the USA Eagles fought back fiercely. Rogers’ powerful runs kept the Americans in the game, narrowing the gap to 19-14. The second half featured intense back-and-forth action, with Australia’s Ash Marsters scoring two tries to extend the lead. The Eagles’ desperation showed as they battled hard despite errors and frustration, culminating in an unfortunate incident when Alev Kelter lost her temper and stepped on Lori Cramer’s head.

Australia’s momentum builds ahead of World Cup

Australia’s rise in women’s rugby is undeniable. Having won five of their last six Tests, their integration of Sevens stars like Caslick into the 15s game and improving set-piece execution signals strong World Cup ambitions. Their next challenge against world No. 2 Canada in Brisbane will test their readiness further, but after this impressive victory, the Wallaroos are sending a clear message to the world: “Long live Queen Caslick.”
