GOVERNMENT OUTLINES RESPONSE TO DISABILITY ROYAL COMMISSION:
* The royal commission put forward 222 recommendations in its final report released in September 2023.
* Of those, the federal government has full or part responsibility for 172 recommendations, while states and territories have the remaining 50.
* The government agreed to 130 recommendations, but only 13 were accepted in full, while 36 were under further consideration and six were noted.
* The response to the royal commission will result in $371 million in measures rolled out.
* A specialist disability employment program will be set up with $227.6 million, along with a disability employment centre of excellence.
* Disability discrimination laws will be updated for the first time since 2009 in an attempt to modernise them.
* State and territory governments will work with the federal government to review Australia’s disability strategy.
* The government’s response to the royal commission did not include recommendations for how to address calls from some commissioners to phase out segregated schools and group homes for people with disabilities.
* Progress on implementing royal commission recommendations will be reviewed every six months by a ministerial council.
