Over 1600 wrecks are believed to dot the WA coastline, but a new season of Shipwreck Hunters Australia aims to find more than just sunken treasure.
The West Australian can exclusively reveal production has commenced on Season 2 of the popular Disney Plus reality series, which follows a team of ocean adventurers, who plumb the depths off WA’s rugged “Treasure Coast” in search of previously hidden wrecks.
Along the way, the six-part series will undoubtedly also uncover new stories of incredible survival and heartbreaking historical tragedy, as well as bringing WA’s stunning marine life into our lounge rooms.
Supported by expert maritime archaeologists from the WA Museum Boola Bardip, the Shipwreck Hunters are hoping to build on the success of an adrenaline-pumping first season, which resulted in a number of significant discoveries.
Such as the 111-year-old sunken Finnish-owned sailing ship, Glenbank, and a 1942 Flying Boat sunk during WWII off Broome.
Screenwest CEO Rikki Lea Bestall is among those who can’t wait to see what the crew will discover in Season 2 and said the series was another example of just how strong the factual sector of WA’s screen industry is.
“Some of the groundbreaking factual projects to come out of WA include the award-winning Ningaloo Nyinggulu … as well as the unstoppable Aussie Gold Hunters and Outback Truckers, which have screened all over the world,” Ms Bestall said.
Shipwreck Hunters Australia Season 2 received major production investment from Screen Australia, and support from Screenwest, Lotterywest, the WA Regional Screen Fund and Tourism WA.
